2005 Interim Review of the PWR Primary Water Chemistry Guidelines

This report documents the biennial review of the Pressurized Water Reactor Primary Water
Chemistry Guidelines (report 1002884, dated 2003) that was performed in 2005 in accordance
with the requirements of NEI 97-06, Rev. 1, Steam Generator Program Guidelines, and NEI 03-
08, Guideline for the Management of Materials Issues. The main result of the two-year review
was that the Guidelines did not require immediate revision at this time except for issuing interim
guidance related to identification of which items in the Guidelines are "mandatory," "shall"
requirements, and "recommendations." A draft document providing this interim guidance was
developed by the Review Committee, and was subsequently transmitted to the Steam Generator
Management Program for review and approval. Modifications to the interim guidance were
made during this process, resulting in the interim guidance contained in Chapter 2 of this report
which was transmitted to the industry on October 18, 2005. Another result of the two year
review was the identification of a significant number of topics that should be further evaluated
and considered during the planned 2006/2007 revision of the Guidelines.
